Announcing the ASWF Landscape

John Mertic

ASWF Community,

We are thrilled to announce the launch of the ASWF Landscape ( https://landscape.aswf.io ), which is an resource that showcases the vast ecosystem of open source that powers the visual effects and animation industries. Read more details on the announcement at https://www.aswf.io/introducing-the-aswf-landscape/.

We invite the entire community to participate in the sustainability of this resource, namely by…
  • Reviewing the existing entries for accuracy, including to ensure entries are pointing to the correct GitHub repository and organization.
  • Submit projects we are missing to be included.
  • Share the landscape with others! You can include the landscape in presentations or promotion of your project ( both png and pdf versions are available ).
Big thanks to the opensourcevfx.org project team which was the original data source for the landscape, along with Larry Gritz and Jean-Francois Panisset who both have spent many cycles on the curation and categorization of projects.

Thank you,

John Mertic

Hi John

I remember September 2019 Apple Inc become premier ASWF member but I not see their logo in that awesome chart. May be I not see Apple's logo or I remember wrong.

I don't see GraphicsMagick mentioned in the "Imaging and Color - Image Formats, I/O, and Processing Libraries" section. The software is offered under the MIT/X11 license.

Our source repository started over 21 years ago (September 19, 1998).

One of the requirements for this list (to keep it from becoming an index of all open source software) is that the project is specifically developed for or targeted at the motion picture/Entertainment industry. Do you think GraphicsMagick meets that requirement? It feels more general purpose to me but I could be wrong.

GM is definitely more general purpose, fantastic as it may be. It feels like it is mainly included as a sub-package within larger private pipelining apps (where it is faster than its ImageMagick parent, and thus, a nice replacement.) or for image conversion sub-pipelines on photo sharing sites.

To Robs point, it was not necessarily developed specifcally for VFX and not necessarily a foundational VFX package component like OCIO or USD, but super close potentially. Maybe an honorable mention section is due for apps like this and DJV?

Wow, this is so great!

opensourcevfx.org lacked some updates in the past years (though there is one fresh entry). So a dynamic solution should be great!

Cheers,
Jérôme

It is indeed general purpose, but does include features to support file-per-frame type work given some other software providing direction:

http://www.graphicsmagick.org/motion-picture.html

At various times I have been informed of films which have been processed in some way using GraphicsMagick. The most recent I have been informed of was Fritz Lang's "The Complete Metropolis" (2010) restoration work. I was also told that the frames from Christopher Reeve's "Everyone's Hero" (2006) went through it for some reason.

I noticed that ImageMagick is already included and GraphicsMagick plays a similar role. The DPX and Kodak Cineon support in GraphicsMagick is completely my own work.

Hi John,

You guys have separate group for Academy Hardware Foundation (AHWF) for open source hardware for movie and TV production like digital movie cameras, camera control (automatic camera control/motion, stabilizer), microphones, digital projectors, mixers, etc? I think open source hardware is important for this industry. I know Axoim develop Apertus° open source movie camera.
