osl for the rest of the world

cryptozoologist <cryptoz...@...>

hi,
i am interested in evaluating osl for physical optical modeling. are
there any renderers other than the in house renderer at sony that has
hooks for osl? is it designed to be a replacement for the renderman
shading language in renderman shaders? can i get a hold of an
academic license for the inhouse renderer? is there a better name for
the in house renderer? may i suggest radiosony (rhymes with
radiosity)?

peace
cryptozoologist

I am interesting to adapt OSL for our offline/interactive/realtime
renderer, especially my lucille renderer which might implement some
sort of physical and accurate calculation of optical phenomena.
Although it depends on how "beautiful" and "practical" OSL language design is.

Any news on the timeline?

Hi,

Any news on the timeline? The few weeks are turning to few months...
Thanks a lot for your great initiative,

We're working feverishly to get OSL into shape for our own
productions, two big shows are supposed to start using it in
December. It had better be mostly working by then (!), so I expect us
to release source code by the end of the year.

I still have the goal to get language specs out well before then, but
again I've just been spending so much time getting it all working that
I've been neglecting the document polishing. Stay tuned, it will come
soon.

trac question

Larry Gritz <l...@...>

When I view tickets by milestone, is there an easy way to get it to
display the milestones in date order? It drives me crazy that it's
alphabetical (which essentially means random order with respect to
dates).

So sorry, I didn't really mean to post this message here. Bad

preliminary spec?

Brian Budge <brian...@...>

Hi Larry -

Hope your deadlines went okay. Any news on when a preliminary spec
will be available?

Thanks,
Brian

The whole thing will be up very soon. Days. Stay tuned.

Today is the day

Larry Gritz <larry...@...>

We are in the process of moving OSL's full source code to googlecode.
Right now.

This is not just a snapshot. It's our live development trunk for the
OSL software we are using at SPI, and from today onward, that's the
only repository we will be using.

A number of other things will be thrown up on the site today -- docs,
our outstanding bug tracking tickets, several explanatory messages,
etc.

Also, while we've tried to bang OSL documentation into some kind of
decent shape for you brave people, there's still lots to do, and
you'll see us check in additional docs as we complete them (and as we
suddenly realize which things are under-documented for people who have
not been steeped in it for months).

Please bear with us through the turbulence.

The code is syncing right now, revision by revision. But it's going
to take an hour or two before it's caught up. So don't bother
checking out the code until I send out the email letting everybody
know that it's fully synchronized.

OSL language spec available

Larry Gritz <larry...@...>

On the "downloads" tab.

Am I blind? If I click on "Files" I don't see any files listed. There is also no downloads link.

Re: Today is the day

OK, it seems to have been synced. The trunk is now where we're
actually doing all our development. We will periodically make release
branches and tags at stable points.

Overview of unique OSL features and state of the project

Larry Gritz <larry...@...>

I've posted a Wiki page giving a brief introduction to the project, a
list of things unique to OSL (compared to other shading languages), a
status report on the current state of the project.

Click on the "Wiki" tab on the OSL project page, or go directly to:

Build errors

Adrien Herubel <her...@...>

Hi,

I encountered several minor build errors both on release and debug. I
corrected a few (I'll release a patch if you're interrested) but there
is one i can't explain :
src/liboslexec/opmessage.cpp:71: error: ‘class ParamValueList’ has no
member named ‘grow’

I didn't find any declaration of the class/struct/typedef of
ParamValueList

I used :
g++ (SUSE Linux) 4.4.1 [gcc-4_4-branch revision 150839]
