Re: OSL - branding

Eric Enderton

Very nice!  A possible tweak: Have the dark regions of the sphere form an “S” shape, such as, a crescent in both the lower-right and the upper-left, connecting in the middle somehow.  Then you have both an “O” and an “S”, as well as the concept of 3D shading.

Of course, in the spirit of "eat your own dogfood" (or was it "you are what you eat"?), of course the OSL LOGO should be in OSL

Fully tweakable logo shader - enjoy :)

ASWF Governing Board and Techincal Community members,

As previously discussed, the LFX Developer Team is making some significant improvements to EasyCLA that we want to make sure you’re aware of.

As a participant in the ASWF project community, you’ll have first access to version 2 of EasyCLA. Your current CLAs, approved lists, and workflows shouldn’t be impacted by this release. However, you’ll notice new features and UI that will make signing and managing CLAs even easier.

How Will This Impact Me?

Contributors:

  • No change to the overall process for existing contributors’ workflows.

  • New contributors (those gated by EasyCLA) will follow the same process as before, with improved UI and contextualized help to ensure a smooth workflow.

CLA Managers & Project Managers:

  • No change to the overall process for your workflows.

  • Improved UI and functionality will make managing your CLAs easier.

What’s New in EasyCLA?

For all Users:

  • Improved user experience & streamlined workflows

  • Contextualized help including tooltips & links to support resources

  • Audit Logs record key activity related to CLA actions & authorizations

For Corporate CLA Workflows:

  • Streamlined UI for adding authorized contributors

  • Search, filter, or download authorized contributor lists for your company

  • Download signed CLAs as PDFs

For Project Manager Workflows:

  • Auto-enable new repositories under a GitHub Organization

  • Auto set-up Branch Protection for the default repository branch

How to Get Started?

You’ll automatically have access to EasyCLA v2 once the cut-over takes place.

  • Contributors: You’ll only need to access EasyCLA if gated (not previously authorized) by GitHub. If so, follow the links from the GitHub pull request status section.

  • CLA Managers & Project Managers: For ASWF projects, go to the EasyCLA Landing Page and select “Proceed” under your respective role, then “EasyCLA Version 2” when prompted. You should see all of your existing data, including CLAs and authorized lists here.

    >> Get Started: easycla.lfx.linuxfoundation.org

Please reach out if you have any questions.

Re: OSL - branding

mariovario@...

I have been very busy these days juggling work and my teaching/instructor duties. I did not have time to work on the logo and move on the design to show in our next meeting - March 4th.
I am very happy though that people are getting involved and are proposing the designs. The idea of coding the final design in OSL itself from Zap - genus! Like a coding quines https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quine_%28computing%29
The only thing that I would move on is to think about the design first (the shaded sphere for example) then make it in the OSL rather than the other way around so we don't limit ourselves.

Re: LLVM -> SPIR-V

boberfly@...

Hey Larry,

I directed Sean Baxter to the mailing list awhile back about his project Circle-lang as another way to approach this, emitting SPIR-V directly from C++ code here:
https://lists.aswf.io/g/osl-dev/message/4399?p=,,,20,0,0,0::relevance,,sean,20,2,0,77939956

But I guess if Intel are donating an official SPIR-V backend that supports Vulkan-style and not just OpenCL, then that's great too!

Re: LLVM -> SPIR-V

Roman Zulak

Count me in...gonna dust off that OSL clang front-end.

There's a clang-based c++ interpreter at CERN that's pretty neat, someone focused on CUDA support is giving an update tomorrow.
Maybe I can nerd out on OSL fragments running at the LHC drawing ray-traced or Vulkan tachyons (well lit of course) soon.

OSL getmessage/setmessage

elizabeth.bonnefoy@...

Hi everyone!

I'm a R&D engineer at Illumination MacGuff, and i'm currently trying to use the setmessage() / getmessage() feature from OSL.

To provide a bit of context: we are creating an OSL shader to read our volume files using an override of the RendererServices::texture3d() function for the lookup in the file.

From this OSL shader, we would like to provide some additional arguments to the texture3d() call, and get back some informations from this call which are not in the available values returned by texture3d().

Maybe it is a bad idea - feel free to give me your advice - but we are trying to use setmessage() and getmessage() to do it, and the second part actually works very well: thanks to an override of the RendererServices::getmessage(), we can use the "trace" source to communicate between functions in RendererServices and the OSL shader.
So we succeed to retrieve additional outputs from texture3d() with something like that:

result = texture3d(...);

getmessage("trace", "texture3d_out0", out0);

getmessage("trace", "texture3d_out1", out1);

But the first part is problematic, because the setmessage() feature seems to be private. There is no available definition of setmessage() in RendererServices, so we can't override it to use the "trace" source.
Ideally we would like to use it like that:

setmessage("trace", "texture3d_arg0", arg0);
setmessage("trace", "texture3d_arg1", arg1);
result = texture3d(...);

Maybe there is an other way to communicate from an OSL shader to a RendererServices functions?

Thank you for your help.
Kind regards,
Zab

Thought this thread was promising. If this ends up happening, it could pave a much easier path for us to eventually make OSL work on non-Cuda GPU platforms.

OSL v1.11.12.0 release

Larry Gritz

We have tagged v1.11.12.0 (a.k.a. Release-1.11.12.0) as the latest supported production release, fully back compatible with earlier 1.11.x releases.

This is a minor change that only changes some things related to build and CI. If you are not experiencing any problems that are addressed by these changes, there is certainly no rush to upgrade.

Release 1.11.12 -- 1 Mar 2021 (compared to 1.11.11)
----------------------------------------------------
* Build: Changes for smooth compile against upcoming Imath 3.0. #1332 #1341
* Build: We weren't properly hiding non-public symbols. #1337
* CI: Cleanup and get rid of the last Travis vestiges. #1334
* CI: Speed up CI runs by using GHA cache + ccache. #1335
* CI: Separate CI process into several individual "steps." #1338

Continuing on the established trend of "shitty hand drawn sketches", here are a couple of thoughts:

1) If we still want to think in the direction of "Connections" here's a couple of options. Tho I think the 1st one is taken by some compositing package....

This one tries to convey that shading graph connection tends to be a tree, rather than a straight chain. Stupid, I know.... but.....

2) For the "just an icon" thinking, I was trying to previously convey something like this.... but ideally slightly better..... a wire-frame sphere "fading" over onto a halftone dotted sphere:

Which should work reasonably well even very small:
