Documentation of "public methods" is odd

Zap Andersson

Edited

So I had fun.

I was gonna convert an existing GLSL shader to OSL, which was quite complicated, using multiple nested functions. And since it's GLSL, every function had access to the shader parameters, since they are declared in a kinda 'global' scope in GLSL.

But in OSL, a function doesn't have access to the shader parameters. So I as painfully adding to each function so that parameters were passed down... it was a big shader, lots of things. Of course I screwed it up and it didn't work.

Then I noticed, by some happenstance... that OSL actually does support local functions inside the shader body, and these do have implicit access to the shader paranmeters!!!!

So I could basically delete all my changes and use almost the original GLSL as-is (with appropriate touch-up to types and stuff)!!! (And now the shader works!)

However, as far as I can tell, this is completely undocumented. Local functions are only mentioned but as "public methods" in the documentation, and as being "callable by the renderer", and nowhere is it mentioned these have implicit access to parameters.

Could we tweak this documentation perchance?

Would have saved me several days of work and three aborted tries to convert this danged shader :)

Re: OSL logo design ideas

Zap Andersson

Warning - stupid sketches done by hand following. These are ideas, not the actual logos - LOL.

Ok, this is tricky, I like the idea of connected boxes, but having the "cable" look like an S without it stopping to evoke the connected cable is .. .hard. And making the L look like another box while still looking like an L ... same problem.

But while I like this idea, I think it misses other opportunities of shading.  We could either go all out and have the O be en actually nicely looking textured sphere, complete with a highlight in the shape of a window, Tin Toy style :)

While I appreciate all the "thinking" about limited color schemes, it's 2021 and not only is paper dead, printing technology has come a long way from 2 color silk screening, so I'm not sure we have to be scared to put actual color and texture on there.

Someone mentioned on the previous meeting an idea that was not dissimilar to what I had myself... a wireframe sphere fading to textured. (The S and the L are just meant to have some random cool texutre on them, like wood and beehive marble or whatnot?)

I was sketching some completely random ideas - feel free to ignore.

I can haz teapots for an O?

Maybe get some rays back in there??

Wells, Alex M

Great point about the graph, it is a major feature of OSL. Like #3, maybe curve up the line a bit more so more visible as an "S" (perhaps extend it above/below the "O", and drop the O that the "L" is overlaid on (the elbow on the top right corner).

Re: OSL logo design ideas

Philippe Leprince

I like Varo’s #1 too.
I would just keep the top right corner of the last O as an outline.

Hi, my 2 cents on the logo design
Suddenly came to my mind something related to the shading graph
just a simple idea
Cheers!

Not sure if the image will make it

Re: OSL logo design ideas

Larry Gritz

I had very similar thoughts to Mitch -- I, too thought that if 4a were a little more spherical and the white facet were off-center and up so it looks like a shaded sphere with highlight, that would be nicely evocative of shading. I'd like to see some variations on that, I think it's really promising. (Though I didn't like the 4a text -- I prefer separation between the words, and the lowercase "open" when Shading and Language begin with caps didn't look right to me. I think that of all the text, 2a, 3b, 4b were nicest.)

I wonder if it's possible to combine that altered 4a idea with something like the bouncing ray, which I think that's one of the parts of the current/old logo that people especially like. (The original idea there was that OSL is designed assuming and catering to modern path tracing renderers that earlier shading languages were not well suited to.) But I'm not crazy abut the specific ray as done in 1c, because the way it interacts with the letters makes it read like "CSL" to me.

I like something about 1b (especially the color version), and I can't quite tell you why. It's neither related to the letters nor the concept of OSL, but there's something appealing to it as a purely abstract design.

Reza's 7 and 11 also tickled my brain in interesting ways.

First off, thanks again to Mario Rokicki for his work on the logo.

I like the semi abstract 3b, simple & recognizable, not too complicated. (Maybe combined with the ray passing through it as 1.c.)

Also like 4B, taking advantage of shading to overlap multiple letters, and still very clearly decipherable.

Wiki page for on-ramping project ideas (& GSoC)

Larry Gritz

I set up this wiki page: https://github.com/AcademySoftwareFoundation/OpenShadingLanguage/wiki/Starter-project--and-GSoC-ideas-page

As mentioned in the TSC meeting yesterday, if we participate again in GSoC again this summer, the deadline to apply is in a couple weeks and the main thing we need to apply (or for that matter, to decide if we want to participate at all) is a good list of ideas of appropriate size for student projects.

But even if we don't do GSoC, it's very handy to have a list of "good first projects". One size that's very interesting is something that can be done in a day -- just big enough to make sure somebody can check out the code, build it, make a simple fix to something, and submit a PR. Another is "half summer" and "full summer" sized projects -- appropriate for GSoC, the other internships ASWF will sponsor this summer, or indeed a company that uses OSL may wish to assign their own summer intern to work on an OSL task.

Please feel free to edit that page to add any good student (or other newcomer) project ideas that you can think of.
